ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Music can be the missing link for your child's development

Andrew Ingkavet

Hi, I’m Andrew.

I’m a wide-angle creative with expertise in multiple fields of media as a composer, musician, writer, designer, animator, actor, producer, and former MTV-VJ. I spent a decade working at the forefront of information design with corporate website clients but I struggled with defining the niche to encompass all of my passions.

Then one day, my toddler son asked for piano lessons.

As I started searching for a teacher, I discovered no one was willing to accept him at age 4. They all said to come back when he was 8. What? Crazy! My son was born singing! He was so music hungry. How could I tell him to wait four more years?

I had studied music education at NYU, so I decided to homeschool him. But that’s when I discovered another surprise. I could not find any age-appropriate curricula for preschoolers.

So I began applying “design thinking”, the same principles I used for information architecture, user experience, and graphic user interfaces to music education.

The results?

My son awoke me to my life’s mission and I produced a fun, simple, and effective new framework for music education. I call it Musicolor Method. My students thrived, my studio grew into a school and as I began sharing this, other teachers began applying it and their enrollment exploded.

Thank you for joining me on this journey and my mission to make music education available to all children!

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

The author gives sound advice on how to teach music to young children and some of the do’s and don’ts in getting them interested and keeping them interested.

What I read in just a few minutes is going to be very helpful to me as my daughter’s first music teacher and beneficial for her as she is learning the basics.

I also have the perspective of being a child and learning the piano and not always loving it and at times even dreading having to practice (mandatory 30 minutes).....so I appreciate the author’s advice to not go too fast in trying to teach your child but easing into it with a short amount of time of practice every day and at a set time of day to establish routine.

This makes it so it’s not so overwhelming for the child or the teacher but more of a fun thing to do.

I have my kids work on the piece until they can play "with their eyes closed" before moving on to the next song. Most songs are familiar favorites which makes it easy to internalize.

My kids were able to play the songs confidently even on an "unmarked/non-color coded" keyboard. I was concerned at first if I could teach my own children the piano. This curriculum made it fun and possible. I highly recommend it!
